The global gaming industry is projected to reach a value of $500 billion by 2030, and in this context, growing attention is being directed toward emerging technology hubs. Against this backdrop, the development of a digital ecosystem and the adoption of innovative technologies in Azerbaijan are creating a strong foundation for the country to become a regional leader.
In recent years, strategic policies aimed at developing the non-oil sector of the economy have significantly contributed to strengthening Azerbaijan’s technological and innovation potential. In particular, support for startups and the creative economy represents major steps toward building a sustainable innovation ecosystem. The importance of the gaming industry within the creative economy should also be highlighted. Over the past few years, Azerbaijan has seen a notable increase in the number of game development studios. Currently, more than 60 studios are operating in the country, many of which aim to gain recognition in global markets.
Naturally, the dynamic growth of the local gaming ecosystem has attracted the attention of leading global companies such as Xsolla—a globally recognized platform providing commercial solutions for the gaming industry, with over 70% of global gaming transactions processed through its infrastructure. In 2024, the company began сотрудничество with the Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA), reflecting its high assessment of Azerbaijan’s digital potential and its selection of the country as a base for regional operations.
In an interview with the “World Business” program on Anewz, Xsolla President Chris Hewish spoke about the company’s global strategy and regional plans. He highlighted the transformation of Azerbaijan’s technological landscape and emphasized the country’s growing role in the regional gaming ecosystem.
Chris Hewish noted that the South Caucasus and Central Asia region holds significant potential, with Azerbaijan standing out as a key player. According to him, revenues from Azerbaijan’s gaming industry alone are projected to exceed $220 million this year.
He also pointed out several factors driving this growth: “First, I must say there is incredible talent in this country. We see highly educated and motivated individuals who understand both the development and business sides of the gaming industry.”
Additionally, Hewish emphasized that the industry’s progress is supported by strong government commitment: “The gaming industry in Azerbaijan is backed by serious initiatives. We see that the country’s leadership is taking decisive steps toward transitioning to a digital economy. At the same time, we have received strong support from IDDA and the team led by Minister Rashad Nabiyev. Naturally, the opportunities created here positively impact the expansion of our activities in the country.”
